Peaceful Bayside is bringing community action and fresh, visionary leadership to Bayside
take action on jet ski SAFETY
After consulting with Transport for NSW Maritime, Councillor Janin Bredehoeft and Deputy Mayor Heidi Lee Douglas moved a motion in March 2025 to support their request for a CCTV camera at Brighton Le Sands to help monitor unsafe jet ski behaviour. The footage is shared with police through Maritime’s depot and control room on the Georges River, allowing for quick action.
Bayside Council unanimously supported this motion, and the camera is now installed. However, it currently cannot be used to issue fines.
The second part of our motion asked Attorney General Michael Daley to change the law so fines can be issued. This was also requested by Transport for NSW Maritime.
The Mayor has written to and spoken with the Attorney General and this is in process - but it may not be ready for summer.
This is where you can help - please to a moment to write to the Attorney General Michael Daley MP and ask him to ensure this legislative change is ready by summer. Share your reasons for why you want safer beaches this summer.
BACKGROUND
Since 2022, Peaceful Bayside has been pushing Bayside Council and the NSW state government for action to increase safety on our Bayside beaches. Councillor Douglas has moved four motions to increase jet ski safety, including calling for:
1. Increased signage, which led to community education campaigns as part of the council's summer foreshore programs.
2. Bayside Council to host a Jet Ski Hooning Hot Spots Map, which is now active, where you can record incidents of anti-social behaviour from jet ski riders.
3. Clearer buoys on Botany Bay demarcating jet ski exclusion zones,
4. Rockdale state member Steve Kamper to form a Jet Ski Hooning Task Force.
Clr Douglas has also pushed for more exclusion zones on Bayside beaches and for increased protection for endangered shorebird habitats.
High-powered Jet Skis (formally referred to as personal watercraft or PWCs by the authorities) on Botany Bay are being seen in increasing numbers, with a vast amount of anti-social and illegal behaviour. This puts swimmers, kayakers, paddlers and other users at risk.
PWCs are banned on Sydney Harbour, on the Parramatta River and on the Lane Cove River so they have become highly concentrated in Botany Bay and on the Georges River.
